The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services has acknowledged that its purpose in licensing the ICE family detention centers, run by private prison corporations GEO and CCA in Karnes City & Dilley is to aid immigration enforcement.  Judge Gee’s order left two options:  license the family detention centers or close them.

The argument to keep them open claims that closing these family prisons would send undocumented people into communities, in violation of federal immigration policy.  (Since when do Texas officials spend state resources on supporting President Obama’s immigration policy?)

We need to be at the DFPS Council hearing in full force to remind DFPS that its job is to protect children in Texas.  The public portion of the meeting will take place on:

Thursday, February 4
11:30 a.m.
Brown Heatley Building, Room #1410
4900 North Lamar Boulevard
Austin, Texas.
