New York Times: more essential reading about Artesia, Karnes, & Dilley

Do read “The Shame of America’s Family Detention Camps”, a fine article in the New York Times by Will S. Hylton, published online on February 4, 2015.

Among this article’s unique contributions is its explanation of the agreed settlement between immigration advocates and the federal government about the treatment of children who are refugees or immigrants. That agreement came from the lawsuit, Jenny Lisette Flores, et al., v. Janet Reno.

We — advocates for the refugee children and mothers — believe that the U.S. government is violating the federal court settlement in Flores by detaining children for weeks and months at a time. Some have been locked up for over six months.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says, oh, no, the Flores agreement only applies to unaccompanied minors.
