Mother’s pledge to stop working for less than a dollar a day until they are their children are released from indefinite incarceration.
For years the U.S. government has operated the Berks “family residential center,” a detention camp for undocumented immigrant families. Women and children, as young as infants, are indefinitely detained while they fight their deportation proceedings, a process that can take years to finish. Women and children have stated that they are left in crowded, cold cells, do not receive enough food or medical attention, work for less than a dollar a day and have been victims of abuse. Because of the unfair treatment and abuse mothers are striking until they and their children are released and the Berks center, like all immigration detention camps, is closed permanently.”
